Today I finished reading an eBook written by Peter Bowerman, author of "The Well-Fed Writer", on how copywriters and graphic designers can really improve their businesses by teaming up. His previous books led me to my current venture, and are guiding me through the copywriting arena . Peter's "Profitable by Design" is a great book that informs freelance copywriters of the benefits of partnering with graphic designers, and how to go about the process.
Once you find a great partner, you will need to know the way business as a team works. Most, if not all, questions you may have about this process are answered. Clients, pricing, and the creative process are all different once you begin working with a partner, but turn-key solutions are invaluable and attractive to the end-users receiving them. Definitely take time to read up on this if you are a copywriter.
I'm excited to put many of the things I learned into action. The problem I've run into building a portfolio with pro bono work is finding clients willing to let a novice writer handle their projects. They wonder, "How good can he really be if he's not even charging me?" So my plan is to find some graphic design students and offer to work on some pieces together to make both our portfolios look good.
Nothing ruins good design faster than bad copy, and vice versa. So let's work together!
